Home Stretch

A bit of initial admin: you may have noticed my new blog theme! I designed this based on a few ideas swirling around my head, hailing predominantly from the style of tumblr themes I used to like. I'm quite proud of the way it turned out and I think I've managed to blend cute fonts (and an Animal Crossing themed background) with a slightly more professional look than I'd usually go for. Let me know what you think!

The Midnight Gospel

[Denis Kovalev x]

Does anybody else get that warm, fuzzy feeling when you're really grateful? I think maybe it's more like when someone does something that feels altruistic or just nice. It's not something I experience often but it's one of my favourite feelings in the world. I often find myself re-reading nice messages or replaying memories of nice things in my head. There's nothing quite like the sensation you get when it feels like someone has really taken the time to understand you or your needs.

I finished my draft!

That's right! I finished my draft! Draft darling! Finished! Draft! FINISHED DRAFT! Your boi has finished his draft! Say it again - draft! Something you still cannot do. Some of you can't even spell draft. That's right! It's finished! Work hard. Play hard. For free. FINI. Did I say I'd finished my draft, right now! i-am-so-thankful-for-my-life. Read more »

Karen is a slur & other short stories

I can't help feeling that my previous post (also from today) was really serious and I feel quite depressed after writing it. In the spirit of quarantine shitposting I thought I'd write a second, positive post!! Also if you're not British and don't know about our very weird elitist editorial news media, 'Karen' is a 'classist' slur, apparently. (Against who exactly??? The white middle class? Really? And there's not even a hint of irony here?)

A Dirty Quarantini, on the rocks

There's a very distinctly bittersweet feeling in the air. Outside feels summery, and at my partner's house where I'm staying, we often keep the front door and windows open during the day. There's the occasional breeze, but things are warming up. There's also the tension, and the constant slinking of police cars and vans up and down the streets. There's the odd bouts of silence (with the occasional sound of a skateboard) and the fact that we can't really leave the house.

Big February 11th Energy

Right now I'm just taking an hour or so's break from reading for my dissertation, which is going pretty slowly and I need to get up earlier tomorrow so I can fit more in. I've a couple of thousand words due over the next week - I had to set up a later deadline with my tutor due to some personal stuff last semester, but he seems more than happy to allow this. Better to get something submitted, albeit slower than I'd like, than nothing at all!

hi there! in between writing some essays on health policy & right-wing populism here in britain, i've been chipping away at this site, adding new bits & planning what i'd like to do in the future.

i'm also trying my hand at some pixel art, following some tutorials on shading and textures, as well as using other art i've found to have a go at making something similar! so far it's going pretty slowly & i'm still getting used to angles. hopefully this will be something i get better at and it's a nice creative escape from academic life!

there's not much else to report atm, i've just been having a couple of days' break from uni work before catching up on my dissertation! it's moving slower than i'd have liked but i have some time to catch up before the new semester starts, and they're saving hours at my job atm so i don't need to be in much. a nice escape from customers! anyways, i'm off to grab some tea & do some criminology reading - smell you later x

i doubt many people (if any) have actually visited this page yet but i'm slowly working on setting up my pages, and i added a poem to the writing section! i think i may start using this site for uploading my writing (it's not great but w/e) so there's that! when i have some time and i'm not doing uni work i'll probably try and upload some of the cool retro stuff i've found, and i may even upload some stuff of my own if i ever bother to download GIMP. also, i'm struggling to make my iframe behave - i want it to fit to the size of the page being displayed, but so far i've only managed to make it keep the size of the longest page (switched to rubbish scrollbars for now). i should also make a button for this site - i'll get around to that at some point x

On (sort of) surviving university

For the first time in, well, quite a while (probably since fresher's week), it actually feels like I might be muddling through uni. Have I had the worst experience? Not by any means. Have I had the best? Also no. For me, taking the massive leap into the dark and moving away to study a new subject in a city I'd hardly visited and living alone for the first time, life has mostly been about staying afloat. Afloat in the personal sense, of course, but also academically and financially too.
